O’Connell’s GFC faced off against Wolfe Tones in a rematch of last year’s Junior Championship Semi-Final on Friday night in the Grove in round six of the league. Unfortunately for O’Connell’s, the result was similar to the semi-final with the visitors coming away victorious. The visitors started the game the better side, with early pressure leading to the Wolfe Tones taking an early lead. Niall Conlon got the home sides first score of the game before adding a two-pointer from a free kick to leave O’Connell’s 0-03 to 0-01 ahead. The Wolfe Tones were able to answer back with a two pointer of their own, leading to both sides going score for score for the remainder of the first half, with Niall Conlon adding a further two points. The first real spark of the game came just before the end of the first half, when the visitors found the back of the net to take a 0-05 to 1-04 lead into the break. O’Connell’s were not to be left out of the goalscoring party, and when the ball fell to Jackie Agnew in front of the Wolfe Tones goal, he did not hesitate to slot the ball away to restore the O’Connell’s lead at 1-05 to 1-04. The two teams traded scores back and forth, with Niall Conlon adding his sixth point of the game, before a dagger blow came with only ten minutes left when the Wolfe Tones found the back of the net for the second time to take the lead back at 1-06 to 2-05. O’Connell’s were able to add on two more points, one more from Niall Conlon and one from Robert Quigley either side of a Wolfe Tones point, but this was to be the last of the home sides scoring with the Wolfe Tones adding on the final four points of the game to secure a 1-08 to 2-10 victory.
