Match Report for O’Connell’s GFC 2-11 v Westerns GFC 2-04
O’Connell’s GFC faced off against Westerns GFC in a wet and windy affair on Saturday, April 19th in round 3 of Division 3 league. O’Connell’s were looking to return to winning ways after last week’s defeat to neighbours Naomh Fionnbarra, along with maintaining their perfect home record in this year’s league. The game started off brightly for O’Connell’s, with Robert Quigley getting the first score of the game after three minutes to put the home side a point ahead. This was followed by two consecutive two-pointers from Niall Conlon and David Hoey to leave O’Connell’s ahead by five after ten minutes. This lead looked threatened when Westerns were awarded a penalty, however a superb double save from Stuart Reynolds kept the visitors at bay. The game hit a lull in the middle third of the half, with a sole Niall Conlon point the only highlight until Westerns finally got on the scoresheet in the 20th minute. The visitors followed this up by scoring from the spot after being awarded a second penalty for an alleged foot block. Robert Quigley added another two-pointer for the home side to leave the score O’Connell’s GFC 0-8 Westerns GFC 1-1 at half-time. The second half started in the worst possible way for O’Connell’s, with Westerns hitting the back of the O’Connell’s net to cut the game to the minimum. O’Connell’s were able to rattle off the next two scores before they were awarded the games third penalty, which Niall Conlon dispatched to leave the score at 1-10 to 2-1. O’Connell’s wouldn’t score for the next 20 minutes until added time, when a shot from Harry Kierans fell short into the hands of Jackie Agnew for the home sides second goal, putting the result of the game beyond doubt, with the final scoring ending 2-11 to 2-04
