Match Report from O’Connell’s GFC 3-13 v St. Nicholas 2-09

O’Connell’s GFC sealed their passage into the final of the Kevin Mullen Plate following a 3-13 to 2-09 victory over St. Nicholas in the Grove. O’Connell’s started the game slow which allowed St. Nicholas to build an early lead when they hit the back of the net in the seventh minute. O’Connell’s, aided by a strong breeze, were able to fight back and three consecutive two pointers left O’Connell’s 0-7 to 1-2 ahead after 15 minutes. Conall Clerkin added another point soon after before the first half hit a lull that lasted until injury time, where a Robert Quigley two-pointer and a Niall Conlon goal seen O’Connell’s take a 1-10 to 1-04 lead into the break. The second half started perfectly, with Robert Quigley finding the back of the net within 90 seconds of the restart to extend the O’Connell’s lead to nine. From the St. Nicholas kickout, the ball fell to T.J Conlon who was fouled in the box to give O’Connell’s a penalty. Despite Robert Quigley putting the penalty wide, O’Connell’s were always able to maintain their lead, despite St. Nicholas scoring 1-4 with minimal reply, and when the ball was put into the back of the St. Nicholas net by Niall Conlon with ten minutes to go, the result was put beyond doubt. Harry Kierans would add on the final O’Connell’s point of the game to see O’Connell’s victorious on a 3-13 to 2-09 scoreline and secure their passage into the Kevin Mullen Plate Final for a group stage rematch with Sean McDermotts.
