Match Report from O’Connell’s GFC 1-14 Naomh Malachi 1-05
O’Connell’s GFC returned to action on Saturday, March 22nd for the Kevin Mullen Plate QF game against Naomh Malachi. Having exited the Kevin Mullen Shield at the group stage, there was still silverware up for grabs as both teams made their way out on to the pitch. O’Connell’s started the game on the right foot, with T.J Conlon pulling off a fantastic block from a Naomh Malachi two-point attempt, and that set the tone for the game as points from Robert Quigley and Cailum Woods seen O’Connell’s race into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after 15 minutes. Despite Naomh Malachi getting themselves off the mark, O’Connell’s would add on another three points unanswered, with a Niall Conlon free kick and an amazing two pointer from the outside of Justin Cooney’s boot. Both sides would add on one more score, with the O’Connell’s point coming from Cian Geeney before the half time break which gave O’Connell’s a 0-7 to 0-2 lead at the break. The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with O’Connell’s getting two early points from Niall Conlon, until the 10th minute when the ball fell to Harry Kierans who buried the ball into the Naomh Malachi net to make the score 1-9 to 0-2. Despite Naomh Malachi finding the back of the net, the result was never in doubt, as three more points for Niall Conlon, along with points for Robert Quigley and James Walsh, secured the O’Connell’s a spot in the semi-final of the Kevin Mullen Plate on a 1-14 to 1-05 scoreline.
