Match Report for Na Pairsaigh 2-08 v O’Connell’s GFC 1-11

O’Connell’s GFC travelled to Blackrock on Saturday, April 26th to take on Na Pairsaigh, with hopes of adding another win to the two they have already achieved. The game started perfectly for the home side, with a flurry of scores in the opening fifteen minutes only answered by a sole Cian Geeney point to leave the hosts 0-3 to 0-1 ahead. O’Connell’s then dominated the next ten minutes of the game with two scores from Robert Quigley and a point from Evan Kearney getting the visitors back on track again. Na Pairsaigh would not give up however, answering back with two scores of their own either side of a Harry Kierans point to leave the sides level at five points each heading into half time. The second half started slowly for O’Connell’s, who eventually got on the board through Robert Quigley, who would go on to score four unanswered points before Justin Cooney and Niall Conlon added efforts of their own. The game really came to life halfway through the second half, when a lovely ball lofted over the top from Justin Cooney fell to Harry Kierans who buried the ball into the back of the home sides net to leave the score 1-11 to 0-6, with O’Connell’s looking well on their way to victory. This feeling only lasted less than a minute as from the resulting kickout, the home side would storm down the pitch and find a goal of their own to keep their hopes alive. Despite having possession of the ball for long stretches of time, and the game being reduced to 14 on 14 following two black cards, O’Connell’s were unable to add another score onto the board, with the visitors finding two more points to leave the game finely poised at 1-11 to 1-08 heading into the final minute. When it looked as if O’Connell’s had done enough to hold onto the victory, the sucker punch arrived, as a high ball into the box was flicked on and past Stuart Reynolds in the O’Connell’s net, with the referee’s whistle immediately following to see the hosts leave with a share of the spoils.
