O’Connell’s GFC 0-08 Lann Léire 2-11

O’Connell’s GFC met Lann Léire in the third round of the Kevin Mullen Shield on Saturday, March 1st on what was a lovely afternoon for football. Despite the good weather, the game wasn’t as favourable as O’Connell’s fell to a 0-08 to 2-11 defeat. O’Connell’s, who had fielded a young team which included two first team debutants, started the game well with three points in the opening 6 minutes from Niall Conlon. The first hammer blow came in the following minute when Dunleer managed to put the ball past Bernard Osbourne and into the O’Connell’s net to make the score 0-3 to 1-2. After another Niall Conlon point in the tenth minute, Dunleer would then go on to score six consecutive points, which could have been more only for a fantastic save from Bernard Osbourne prevented a second goal. Points were traded over and back in the final few minutes of the half, with Niall Conlon getting his fifth of the day, along with Cailum Woods adding one from midfield. A true gut punch came in injury time of the first half, after a well worked Dunleer move found them the back of the net for the second time to leave the score 0-6 to 2-9 in favour of Dunleer at the break. The second half was a more tightly contested affair with both teams struggling to add more scores onto their tallies. O’Connell’s were fortunate not to concede another goal, when a penalty awarded to Dunleer in the 38th minute rattled the post. The game seen itself out from there with both teams only adding two points, with O’Connell’s getting another from Niall Conlon and one from Harry Kierans, onto their first half tallies.
