Match Report for O’Connell’s GFC 8-15 v Annaghminnon Rovers 1-09

O’Connell’s GFC took a trip to Stonetown on a beautiful Saturday evening to take on Annaghminnon Rovers in round seven of Division 3 league play. A game dominated by goals, O’Connell’s managed to get eight in total, from six different goal scorers, to ensure that they would return to winning ways after last week’s defeat. The game started perfectly for the visitors, with Robert Quigley opening the scoring after three minutes with a point, followed swiftly by a Cian Geeney goal to leave O’Connell’s 1-01 to 0-00 ahead after five minutes. From there, O’Connell’s kicked into gear with back-to-back points from Harry Kierans and Robert Quigley extending the O’Connell’s lead out to six. If things were bad for the hosts, they only got worse when Niall Conlon found the back of the net for the visitors second of the game to put O’Connell’s 2-03 to 0-00 ahead. This was followed up a minute later by Adam Flynn, with the cornerback bombarding forward to add a third goal to the O’Connell’s tally. From this position, O’Connell’s never looked back. Points from Sean Cairns, Robert Quigley and Cian Geeney extended the O’Connell’s lead to 15, before Harry Kierans found the back of the net for the games, and O’Connell’s, fourth goal. Two further Robert Quigley points split by a Jackie Agnew effort ensured O’Connell’s took a very commanding lead into half-time, with the scoreline standing at 4-09 to 0-00. Annaghminnon Rovers started the second half significantly better than the first, with the hosts finally getting on the scoreboard with a two point effort. Despite this, O’Connell’s were not about to allow a comeback to gain momentum, with Evan Kearney finding the back of the net for O’Connell’s fifth goal of the game. The hosts would finally get a run of scores following this, getting four of the next five scores only broken up by a solitary Cian Geeney point. Niall Conlon was able to add on another score for O’Connell’s before Annaghminnon Rovers added two more scores, including a goal of their own. Not to be left out of the fun, Sean Cairns added a goal of his own for O’Connell’s sixth of the game, before Niall Conlon added the visitors seventh from the penalty spot. Two more Niall Conlon points and Harry Kierna finding the back of the net for the second time ensured that O’Connell’s rounded out victory in style.
